Yahoo launches women-centered site
Yahoo has launched a women-centered Website, Shine.
Comments:
"When we started talking about creating a new website for women, we wanted to avoid all of the common categories that advertisers or marketers tend to put us in"
Wait, focusing primarily on "fashion and beauty" (the first category in the page header) isn't avoiding the "common categories of advertisers"?
Ok, ok, so Shine doesn't want us to be seen as "moms" or as "single women" but as just "women". Hmmm... I'm remembering something about the second wave of the feminist movement and how the whole "we are all the same because we are all women" thing really blew up in their (the white women's) faces, and it doesn't look like Shine is making any bold moves to reach out to women of color.
The history of the feminist movement aside, it is heartening to see articles that take men to task for whining about their current social position, but I am not apt to continue reading if the site is also interspersed with articles on a "hand held sliming device" or that reinforce the idea that I should be ashamed for eating Easter candy.

I agree with Sara -- this new site doesn't seem all that new. It would have been more interesting had Yahoo! chosen to reach out to a different niche than all the other fashion/beauty/celebrity-centered women's content out there.
