Google Sites, Web site authoring tool, launches
A Web-authoring tool was launched by Google this week. Google Sites lets users create a series of linked Web pages. Editing is done by a WYSIWYG tool. Storage is quite large, 10 GB per user per site. Integration with other Google services is provided, unsurprisingly since Sites has been released as part of the Google Apps suite. Functionality is basic, not advanced. As with wikis, users can make small changes to preexisting documents, and track those changes per user over time.
Google pitches Sites to include courseware uses. Class use appeares prominently in the project's promotional video. A k-12 class example also appears on the Sites site.

Some view Sites as competing with other collaboration services, namely Microsoft's Sharepoint and IBM's Lotus Notes. An additional level to Sites is that it allows users to author Web content without relying on their institution's or enterprise's IT department, a the Wall Street journal observes.
Google Sites is based on Jotspot, a wiki platform bought by Google in 2006.
