Open Social update: MySpace joins, screenshots and criticism appear
The Google-led Open Social project is still hours short of formal release, but details continue to emerge.
MySpace has joined the Open Social alliance.
Screenshots of early application examples have appeared, from TechCrunch and from Netscape's founder Marc Andreessen.
Criticisms of Open Social have appeared before the formal release. A New York Times article notes that many people value closed social networks for reasons of privacy and ease of use. Dave Winer, developer, sees Google targeting Facebook, and argues that "Standards devised by one tech company whose main purpose is to undermine another tech company, usually don't work". Moreover, cross-service search is apparently not available. The Inside Facebook blog summarizes still more concerns:
Google is announcing this tomorrow, but how long will it be before OpenSocial applications and social networks are in public production?
Will OpenSocial APIs actually lead to any significantly new compelling applications?
What about performance? OpenSocial is a JavaScript API, so many widgets on a page may want to make many HTTP requests.
Meanwhile, Google's stock market price soared above $700/share.
