Facebook opens up for development
Popular social networking site Facebook is inviting developers to expand its services, aiming to become a social networking platform. A developers' site has been launched, offering an anatomical introduction.
One avenue for development is in widgets, mini-applications which occupy a small part of a page. Already a social music plugin, iLike, has been launched and populated. One site found more than thirty applications already flourishing.
Penn State's Cole Camplese considers ways of building campus digital services on top of Facebook.
Facebook's competition with MySpace has deepened.
