The Economics and Politics of Open Educational Media: Mike Roy at NMC
Mike Roy (Wesleyan University) presented on "The Economics and Politics of Open Educational Media" at the New Media Consortium's 2006 fall regional conference. Supporting this engaging, interactive presentation was a wiki page for resources.
One topic: what sustains the development (not just the aggregation) of digital academic content? What incentives are available to draw faculty into such development? Current models include subscription (MERLOT), grant funding, and institutional support (OpenCourseWare). Future models are likely to hybridize these. Is microcontent a way to increase faculty involvement?
Final discussion speculated on possible futures. One may be working with, or being influenced by, SPARC's Create Change project. Another is examining the pay-to-publish model. Educating campuses about alternative copyright projects could be valuable. Analysis of what's already available should be useful. Ethnographic studies (how do people search? how do they work with materials?) and literature reviews (especially around assessment) could be mounted collaboratively.
