Arabic Search Engine Will Debut Under New Name
An article in Gulfnews.com reports on a new, but much delayed Arabic search engine engine, set for a year-end launch with new backers.
A partnership between Seekport Internet Technologies, Saudi Arabian firm Mitsco Group and Dubai-based Madar Research was supposed to have launched a search engine named Sawafi last October.
The project sought to provide a local alternative to Google and serve the growing number of web users in the Middle East and North Africa whose first language was Arabic.

I think the main problem in searching the Arabic web is not the lack of search engines, but the difficulty of writing Arabic for Internet savvy youth who are much more proficient with Latin-based keyboards.
I prefer to use http://search.eiktub.com which is a true transliteration based solution that uses Google to search the Arabic web. Plus they offer a pad where one could write emails http://www.eiktub.com/online.html
